Job Description

Candidates are required to hold a clear enhanced CRB, references covering the last 5 years and a full CV covering and explaining any gaps in your employment history and also having the reasons for leaving previous posts.

To manage a caseload of service-users with sensory impairment, dual-sensory impairment and other disabilities requiring assessment of their needs, carry out Initial and core assessments and investigations, develop care plans and co-ordinate support packages as necessary. • To assess the needs of children with disabilities whilst also recognising the needs of carers requiring assessment and provision of support. • Liaising and developing close working relationships with other professions and agencies to ensure service-users receive services in accordance with assessed needs and within a multi-agency framework. • Where appropriate, to participate in multi-disciplinary teams and contribute to their effectiveness. • To provide emotional and practical support, advice and advocacy to children with disabilities and carers as required. • Maintaining accurate written and computerised data of intervention in a timely manner. • To maintain up to date knowledge of current research, corporate standards, policies and procedures and of current legislation and regulations. • To ensure that children with disabilities who are looked after and/or on the Child Protection Register are well supported, visited and cared for in accordance with good practice and statutory requirements • To participate in the on-going development and training of the team and the service area. Attending team meetings and sharing ideas and best practice. • Preparing for and attending supervision meetings. • Participate in the duty rota system, as agreed within the team. • Assess the needs and risks for children and identify actions appropriate to meet needs and address risk. • Ensure child protection and care plans are implemented and reviewed. • Follow the Council’s child protection procedures. • Keep knowledge and practice up to date through training and other professional development opportunities. • Any other duties commensurate with the grade that may, from time to time, be required maintaining the requirements of the General Social Care Council. • To undertake occasional evening work and be available for very occasional weekend activities as required by the Schools, Children & Families Service. • Knowledge, Skills and Experience • DipSW, CQSW, CSS or equivalent – essential. • GCSS registration as a registered social worker – essential. • BSL Stage 1 (at least) qualification – desirable. • Skills in Word, Outlook and computerised data management • Skills in assessment- and report-writing • Knowledge of court work in relation to child care matters and an understanding of the legal process. • Knowledge of current legislation pertinent to child protection (e.g. Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004, Guidance and Regulations, Every Child Matters). • Knowledge and understanding of child development theories. • Knowledge of disability issues. • Knowledge of therapeutic methods of working with dysfunctional families and/or families in crisis. • Knowledge of LAC legislation and procedures. • BSL – desirable. • Two years post-qualifying experience – desirable. • Experience in a child care setting – essential. • Experience of family placement work – desirable. • Experience in undertaking assessments and the ability to demonstrate how these are used in forming appropriate care plans for children with disabilities. • Recent experience of communicating with children of all ages and children with disabilities and working in partnership with parents and/or carers. • Experience in planning activities and programmes for children and young people with disabilities and their parents. • Experience in child protection work, especially Section 47 investigations and assessments.
