Job Description
Job Summary
- To work as an autonomous practitioner to provide holistic care for Ophthalmology patients using advanced knowledge and skills.
- To be responsible for ensuring patients receive pre-operative assessment.
- To lead on the development and implementation of the patient's care pathway for cataracts services within the Will Adams NHS Treatment centre.
- This will include a nurse led pre-assessment and follow-up for cataract patients.
- The post holder will also work in other departments as required during times when the cataracts service is quiet.
- To lead on clinical audit and research related to these developments.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
- To apply clinical skills within the ophthalmology unit by undertaking patient assessment and physical examination and demonstrating expert knowledge and diagnostic skills prescribing the appropriate care or treatment as appropriate, adhering to written trust protocols.
- Ability to conduct biometry, tonometry, visual acuity and all other skills related to pre-and post operative assessment necessary.
- Develop nurse led consent in line with Trust guidance and in conjunction with the clinical and management team.
- To provide a service to post-operative patients, ensuring queries and problems are addressed with appropriate follow up.
- To be involved in ensuring patients receive a high standard of care by developing protocols and policies for Cataracts.
- To develop patient information relevant to the service and provide appropriate verbal information to empower the patient to make informed decisions.
Eye Outpatients
- Prepare department for daily ophthalmic activity
- Prepare medical notes
- Complete Nursing history reviews
- Conduct pre-assessment to ascertain patient is fit to undergo surgery.
- Carry out ophthalmic examinations within the guidelines of the department.
- Communicate and liaise within a multi-disciplinary team.
Eye Day Care
- Lead pre-assessment clinics
- Carry out ophthalmic examinations
- Post-operative telephone assessment
- Patient education and information
- Assist / supervise other members of the team in the preparation and cleaning of the area.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse registered with NMC
Educated to diploma level or working towards Teaching qualification 998 or C & G 7307
- Ophthalmic 346 or equivalent
- Evidence of CPD
Experience
- Significant Ophthalmic nursing experience at a Band 5 level.
- A reflective approach to own work and work of others
- Developing and implementation of Nurse led clinics including cataracts
- In-depth knowledge of Action on Cataracts and experience of implementing new initiatives
- All skills required for pre and post operative assessment of cataract patients
- Working as part of a team
